The #1 Warning Sign You’re About to Get Fired

33523010_sAdmit it… you don’t like your job.

You didn’t mean to take the first thing you got offered. But you did. Turns out it’s worse than you thought it would be. You don’t like the company, your boss, or most of your co-workers.

You can’t believe this is your life now. You have this dreary, I-do-nothing-important job that grinds you down every day.

Maybe you could earn as much going freelance. Consult. Maybe coach?

But you can’t help worrying….

Should you try to find something else full time, rather than risk leaving now and going out on your own?

Should you go back to school or get some kind of certification?

Should you just grit your teeth, be patient and wait for recruiters or clients to find you?

One thing for sure. You can’t stand this job much longer.

There you have it! The number one warning sign you are about to get fired is how you feel about your job.

Don’t think you are fooling anyone. And, don’t get fooled yourself.

Every client I’ve seen who’s been fired, spent at least six months – sometimes six years – hating the job they were in. And they thought no one knew. They thought the boss wasn’t paying attention.

Then they got fired. Funny thing is – they were SURPRISED! Angry! Bitter!

And really, really scared.

Losing your job is a very scary thing. And if you hated your job, you feel really strange. After all, what could be better than losing something you hate? Keeping it?

It’s time to start thinking about what you really want to do. And where you really want to work. Maybe you really do want to work for yourself. Maybe you really can be a successful freelancer, coach or consultant.

Then it’s time to spruce up your LinkedIn summary. In fact, you may need to make some radical changes in the way you present yourself on LinkedIn and on social media sites.

Just make sure your privacy settings block your network from knowing you are making changes. If not, everyone will know what you are doing – before you are ready to announce it.

The Second Biggest Mistake You Are Making

10745740_lMy career transition practice is full of amazing people with a huge well of talent, potential and experience. Each person is completely different. And with each person, I’ve identified a specific obstacle they are overcoming, so they can quickly move ahead on their goals. That problem identification and problem solving is the primary focus of our work together.

Typically that obstacle has arisen from a mistake in their understanding of the specific challenge or opportunity they have, and the right way to approach it. Of course, this would be a specific problem to solve in each specific situation.

However, no matter how specific the #1 mistake or obstacle is for each individual, the #2 mistake they’ve been making is pretty much the same. I suspect you are making the same mistake as well. The second biggest mistake people make in a career transition or business is this…

You think you need something else.

You think you need something more than what you have right now at your fingertips.

I hear these things:

– “I need to brush up on my Spanish skills.”

– “I need more ideas. I need new content.”

– “I need a website. I need a new website.”

– “I need a contact management system.”

– “I need a project management app.”

– “I need more recommendations on LinkedIn.”

– “I need to get another certification, MBA, to finish my AA…”

– “I need a partner.”

– “I need an investor.”

– “I need an office.”

– “I need to convince ….”

No. You. Don’t.

You don’t need a business card, location, degree, another degree or anything else. If you are reading this from some device with your own eyes and you understand this content: you have everything you need right now.

Stop yourself from looking for reasons not to succeed. Stop yourself from wasting one more moment.

You have you. That’s what you need. Anyone who ever told you a piece of equipment, the perfect resume or portfolio, or anything else is wrong. Anyone who ever told you that you are not enough is wrong.

Now go tell everyone you know exactly what you do – or want to do. Speak plainly. Then, ask them whom they know among their friends who might need what it is you do. Or, could possibly connect you with someone who might.

What you need is hiding in plain sight. Stop looking for it. See it.

What Successful People Read that You Don’t

18567633_sI was finalizing a purchase with a new company this weekend and because it was a new vendor, I had to complete the deal by registering on the company’s website. The sales representative was charming and extraordinarily knowledgeable throughout the entire negotiation, so it didn’t surprise me when she wanted to coach me through this last “mile.” We sat together while I completed some forms online.

When the website wouldn’t take capital letters and persisted in translating everything I input to lower case, I laughed and said,

“Wow, your company will think you’re doing business with e.e. cummings.”

“No, we don’t do business with an e.e. cummings, “ she replied. “At least not in my territory.”

Because I am both an educator at UCLA Extension and a working MBA, my heart sank a bit. I know we teach you sales, business, accounting, marketing, operations, human resources, manufacturing, and then some in business school. But if that’s really all you know, we have failed you by graduating you.

The most successful business people read.

They read way beyond their business field. They consume poetry, fiction, science, philosophy, science fiction, science fantasy, religion, psychology and then some. Without these references, you are doomed to lose prestige when your product knowledge is no longer at issue.

We may have done you a real disservice if you have an undergraduate business degree.

Consider whether you have an education deficit, which is more of a liability than you might think. Consider what subject areas would expand your point of view, like anthropology, fine arts, sociology, physical science, biology, mathematics, linguistics, political science and the whole host of topics that enliven the world with different perspectives.

You can be an autodidact, a MOOC-addict or at least a casual reader in these other fields. However, nothing comes close to being engaged by a teacher or mentor who is dedicated to challenging you on a new subject.

Successful people actively widen or deepen the shallow areas of their education. They never stop learning – really learning, not just apprising themselves of a topic with a Buzzfeed style list.

Read and learn to get a richer framework for life, and life brings you greater riches.
